Can You Climb the Pyramids at Teotihuacan?
Clear answer on climbing Teotihuacan’s Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon, what is closed, what can change, and what to do instead.
You cannot climb the Pyramid of the Sun (closed since 2020). Moon climbing access has been limited and intermittent. Always verify with INAH; plan a great visit without assuming any summit access.
Direct answers
Pyramid of the Sun: public climbing closed since 2020.
Pyramid of the Moon: access has changed. Limited ascent has been allowed at times (often only the first body/level, including a May 2025 reopen) and restricted again at other times. Never assume you can climb.
Why the rules exist
Conservation and visitor safety. These are archaeological monuments first, viewpoints second.
What to do instead
Walk the Avenue of the Dead, spend time in the Moon Plaza, visit La Ciudadela and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, and use the museums. The site remains extraordinary without a summit.
How to check before you go
Look for current INAH notices the week of your visit, and ask staff on arrival. Policies can shift after conservation work or security events.
Photography tip
Morning side light along the avenue often beats a noon climb fantasy that is not available anyway.
Recent access in plain terms
The Pyramid of the Sun has remained closed to climbing since 2020. The Pyramid of the Moon has seen limited reopenings for partial ascent and later restrictions. Policies move; your itinerary should not depend on a staircase.
What limited ascent means
When Moon climbing is allowed, it is often only to an early terrace or first body. Expect queues, staff instructions, and effort at altitude.
Designing a visit without summit pressure
Walk the avenue, sit in the Moon Plaza, visit the Ciudadela, and use the museums. The site remains extraordinary without a summit.
If a guide promises a climb
Ask which structure, which level, and what INAH currently allows. A good host tells the truth even when it disappoints a checklist.
